So how many caught the June 4th launch of Discovery Channel's Planet Green - a 24 hour "eco-lifestyle" television network? One of the programs, Greenovate, has actually been around for a while; first on Discovery Channel then on TLC. It is similar in format to "This Old House" or other home improvement/remodeling shows, but with a "green" twist. I particular like the emphasis on increased re-sale value, in addition to environmental sustainability and utility savings.
And then there's Living with Ed. Ed Begley, Jr. is a well-known actor and long-time environmentalist. This "reality" series is more real than most as viewers peek inside his day to day life of practicing what he preaches. I don't know that I would want to live with Ed monitoring my showers, but I admire his dedication and enjoy his wit.
One of my favorite shows on this new network is Greensburg. After being devastated by a tornado in May 2007, the community decided to rebuild the town entirely "green."
From the rubble, however, came a resilient and courageous call from the people of Greensburg to not only rebuild their community, but also to send a bold message to the rest of the nation. Greensburg committed to building smarter and better, determined to make their town a model for the future of cities of all sizes throughout the U.S. and the rest of the world. They decided to rebuild Greensburg as a model green community.
These, along with about a dozen other shows from silly to fasinating, are certain to entertain. They will also help mainstream the 'green revolution.'
