Florida Power & Light in the Top Ten Green Power Programs Nationwide
May 19, 2008 by ImpactRealEstate commentThe National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has released their "Top Ten" lists of utility companies' "green power programs." Per the U.S. Department of Energy's website:
NREL has compiled extensive data on utility green power programs and produced the following "Top Ten" lists of program characteristics and results: total sales of renewable energy to program participants; total number of customer participants; customer participation rates; and the lowest premium charged to support new renewables development.
And Florida Power & Light made two of the lists:
- Total Number of Customer Participants
- Green Pricing Program Renewable Energy Sales
Florida Power & Light's program is called "Sunshine Energy" and develops solar, wind and biomass to serve Florida's ever growing energy needs.
In just one year as a Sunshine Energy customer, you can avoid over 10,800 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions nationwide ? that's equal to as much as a car would produce in almost 12,000 miles of driving, recycling 26,625 aluminum cans or recycling 4,326 pounds of newspaper.
As a result of FP&L's "Sunshine Energy" program, the second largest solar array in the southeast United States is now operating, as are the solar panels installed by FP&L at the Miami Museum of Science, South Miami Senior High School, and MAST Academy. In partnership with Green Mountain Energy, FP&L is also investing in wind farms and biomass energy technology. The "Sunshine Energy" program is now available to non-residential customers as well.
