The spring home-buying season is kicking off in the midst of the most painful real estate recession in decades, with prices tumbling and many Americans losing their homes to foreclosure because they can't pay their mortgages. As buyers and sellers begin what's typically an energetic time for real estate activity, USA TODAY convened a virtual roundtable of housing experts and everyday Americans for an online conversation.

Commercial real estate markets hold steady

NEW YORK – April 24, 2008 – A new report by Moody’s Investors Service indicates that six of the seven commercial property types held their ground at the end of the first quarter. Limited service hotels bucked the trend, with scores declining to 64 on Moody’s scoring system, from 77 in the fourth quarter of 2007.

The ratings agency’s scoring system assigns scores of 0 to 100, with a higher score indicating better performance. A traffic light analogy further defines performance, with green indicating the highest-scoring performance (67 to 100), yellow for average (34 to 66), and red for the worst performance (0 to 33).

Realtors see signs of improving housing market; credit Amendment 1

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – March 27, 2008 – Only weeks after Florida voters passed Amendment 1 in late January, Florida Realtors have noted signs of increased interest from potential homebuyers heartened by the measure’s property tax relief benefits, especially the portability provision.

In a recent online poll conducted by the Florida Association of Realtors (FAR), about one-third – 35.5 percent – of the Realtor respondents answered yes, when asked if more property owners were interested in buying or selling property, thanks to portability.
